Why Harris County keeps us busy

The county that carries the Gulf Coast industrial corridor.

Harris County is where our business lives. Houston is the county seat and our home city, and the county wraps around the upper Houston Ship Channel, the waterway that ties Houston, Pasadena, Deer Park, Baytown, and La Porte into one continuous band of refineries, chemical plants, and marine terminals. The greater Port of Houston ranks No. 1 in the United States in foreign waterborne tonnage at 220.1 million short tons, spread across roughly 200 private and 8 public terminals along the 52 miles of the channel, per Port Houston.

That activity is not abstract for a repair shop. A Martin Associates economic impact study cited by Port Houston found that Ship Channel activity supports 1.54 million Texas jobs and $439 billion in statewide economic value, nearly 20 percent of Texas GDP. Nearly every one of those industrial jobs stands near rotating equipment, and rotating equipment runs on gearboxes. The Houston region also hosts the largest petrochemical manufacturing complex in the United States and more than 4,200 energy related firms, per the Greater Houston Partnership.

The equipment behind the skyline

Refineries, chemical plants, and ports. All of it turns on gears.

The scale of industry in this county is hard to overstate. In Baytown, ExxonMobil runs a refinery that can process up to 584,000 barrels of crude oil per day, one of the largest in the United States, per ExxonMobil, on a complex that covers about 3,400 acres and has operated since 1919, per Wikipedia. In Pasadena, Chevron completed a 2024 upgrade of its Pasadena Refinery that lifted light crude capacity by nearly 15 percent to 125,000 barrels per day, per Chevron. In Deer Park, the Pemex refinery is rated at 340,000 barrels per day and sits 18 miles east of Houston on the channel, per Pemex.

The chemical side is just as dense. The Bayport Industrial District at Pasadena spans roughly 8,500 acres with more than 60 chemical plants, one of the largest private industrial complexes in the country, per Wikipedia, and Chevron Phillips Chemical's Cedar Bayou plant in Baytown is that company's largest United States manufacturing site at 2,100 acres, per the Cedar Bayou fact sheet. Port Houston's public terminals moved a record 53.07 million tons of cargo and 4,139,991 TEUs of containers in 2024, per Port Houston.

Every one of those operations depends on the equipment we rebuild. Refineries and chemical plants send us pump and cooling tower drives, mixer and agitator reducers, and planetary gearboxes. Plastics processors around Bayport run the extruder gearboxes we specialize in. Terminals and scrap yards along the channel wear out crane wheels and hoist drives. When any of it fails, the unit is a short truck ride from our bench.

A shop inside the county

Real proximity, not a marketing radius.

77071

Based in southwest Houston

Our shop is at 8449 West Bellfort Ave, Houston, TX 77071. Downtown and the Ship Channel industrial corridor are roughly 15 to 30 minutes away by US 59, I 610, and Beltway 8.

Free

Local pickup and delivery

Pickup, crating, rigging, and return delivery are free in the Houston area, even on heavy reducers that weigh thousands of pounds. Your crew never has to move the unit.

24/7

Emergency response

The emergency line is answered around the clock. We have returned rebuilt units to service in as little as 5 days on crash jobs.

Here is what travel actually looks like from our dock. Pasadena runs about 30 to 35 minutes by Beltway 8 East to SH 225. La Porte runs about 35 to 45 minutes on the same corridor. Baytown runs about 40 to 50 minutes by Beltway 8 East and I 10 East. Deer Park runs about 30 to 40 minutes. That means a driver can usually be at any Harris County plant within about an hour of your call, and a unit that comes off the machine in the morning can be torn down and inspected the same day. For plants outside the county, we ship free both ways nationwide.

Why plants here choose us

What a Harris County plant gets from a Harris County shop.

Plenty of companies will quote a Ship Channel gearbox job from three states away. We are the alternative that lives here. Solution Gear Co. is family owned and has been rebuilding gearboxes for over 20 years, and everything happens in one building: the people who quote your job are the same people who cut the gears, pour the babbitt, regrind the journals, and test run the finished unit. Nothing is brokered out, so nothing is lost between the promise and the bench.

That matters most on the jobs OEMs walk away from. When the original manufacturer is gone, or the lead time on a new unit is measured in months, we reverse engineer the gearing from the worn parts and cut new gears in house. Rebuilds are backed by up to a 24 month workmanship warranty, and a rebuild can save you up to 50 percent versus the OEM purchase price. For a county where a single idle line can stall a terminal, a refinery unit, or an entire extrusion plant, the combination of proximity, speed, and in house control is the whole point.
