Reverse engineered gear sets
Helical and bevel gears measured, drawn and cut new in house to the original geometry when no part exists anywhere.
Western Gear built heavy industrial gearboxes for mining, oil and gas, marine and process plants for decades, and a surprising number of those units are still turning today with no factory left to call. That is the whole problem with a failed Western Gear drive: the equipment is worth saving, and the parts do not exist. We are a family owned Texas gear shop, established in 1998, and we repair, rebuild and reverse engineer Western Gear units in house. We measure what is there, cut what cannot be bought, and send the drive back stronger than it left the factory. See our full gearbox repair capabilities for the bigger picture.
Western Gear was one of the big American gear builders of the twentieth century, supplying industrial reducers, custom drives and heavy gearing to mines, oilfields, shipyards and mills. The company changed hands and the industrial gear lines were broken up long ago, so today the brand mostly means one thing to a plant: a rugged old gearbox on a critical machine, and nobody to buy parts from. Most of what we see on these units is the same handful of failure patterns: bearings that ran out their life, tooth flank pitting, worn shafts and bores, and seals that let the oil out. We have built our process around catching all of it before we quote a single part.
Distance is not a problem. We offer free shipping both ways, free pickup and delivery including crating and rigging, and a free inspection before you commit to anything. Whether your Western Gear drive runs a mine hoist, a pump jack or a draw block, send it in and we will tell you exactly what is wrong. Because these rebuilds usually mean cutting gears from scratch, our gear cutting shop is where most of the work happens.
Western Gear units reach our bench from every heavy industry. We service them all as an independent shop, including the types below.
If it says Western Gear on the tag, or the tag is gone and you think it might, send it anyway. We cut our own gears, so we are not limited to a parts catalog that no longer exists.
Western Gear equipment was built heavy, so failures almost always trace back to load, lubrication or simple age, not to bad design. These are the conditions we find most often.
Because so many of these failures start at the bearings, we treat bearing work as its own discipline. See our bearing repair page.
Every Western Gear unit follows the same disciplined path through our shop, and it starts with a free, no obligation inspection.
All of this happens under one roof in Houston, Texas, which is how we hold quality and keep turnaround honest. Line down right now? Our emergency line is answered 24/7, and we ship nationwide.
We are an independent gear repair shop. We are not an authorized Western Gear dealer or service center and we are not affiliated with the Western Gear brand or its owners. We name Western Gear only to describe the equipment we service, and we repair and rebuild these units as an OEM alternative for plants that need them back in service without OEM lead times.
Because we ship free both ways and handle pickup, delivery, crating and rigging at no charge, it does not matter whether your plant is in Texas or across the country. The inspection is free and there is no obligation to proceed. If you want to see the kind of heavy industrial work we do every day, our industries and brands pages cover the rest of the equipment we keep running.
Up to a 24 month workmanship warranty backs every rebuild, which is our way of standing behind the fact that the unit really did leave here right.
Helical and bevel gears measured, drawn and cut new in house to the original geometry when no part exists anywhere.
Industrial reducers torn down, inspected flank by flank, and rebuilt with reground or recut gearing.
Spiral bevel sets reground or cut new and reset to correct contact pattern and backlash.
Discontinued bearing sizes replaced with modern equivalents fitted to the original housing.
Input and output shafts, splines and coupling bores built up and machined back to spec.
Hardened seals replaced, contaminated oil and starved bearings corrected so the unit stays cool and lubricated.
Cracked or distorted housings welded, line bored and machined true, because the housing cannot be bought.
Full measurement and documentation so the next rebuild, years from now, starts from drawings instead of guesswork.
Yes. We ship free both ways and cover pickup, delivery, crating and rigging at no charge, so your location does not matter. Legacy drives come to us from mines, oilfields and mills across the country, and our emergency line answers around the clock.
Not in any practical sense for most industrial units. The company changed hands and the industrial gear lines were broken up decades ago. We are an independent shop, not affiliated with Western Gear or any successor, and we rebuild these drives by measuring and cutting what cannot be bought.
Yes. That is the normal case. We measure the gears, shafts and housing, draw them, cut new gearing to the original geometry, and keep the drawings so the next rebuild starts from documentation.
We select a modern bearing with the same load capacity and fit it to the original housing, machining a sleeve or adapter where needed. Obsolete bearings are a routine part of legacy gearbox work.
It depends on what we find during the free inspection. We send a written findings report and a firm quote before any work begins, so you know the cost and the timeline before you commit. There is no obligation to proceed.
Free shipping both ways, free inspection, and an up to a 24 month warranty on every rebuild. Family owned in Texas for over 20 years, answering the emergency line 24/7 and shipping nationwide. Tell us about your unit and we reply fast, often the same day.
