NORD Gearbox Repair and Rebuild

NORD Drivesystems units run on a huge share of the conveyors and process lines we see come through the shop. If you operate a plant in or around Houston, you already know the look of a NORD nameplate on a shaft mount reducer hanging off a belt drive, or a tall MAXXDRIVE industrial gear unit bolted to a bucket elevator. When one of those units starts running hot, leaking, or making metal, we get it back to service. Our team rebuilds NORD gearboxes every week, and we do it as an independent shop, not as a parts swapper.

We repair and rebuild NORD gear units and gearmotors at our Houston shop, rebuilt stronger than the original. That covers helical inline, parallel shaft, helical bevel, worm, and MAXXDRIVE industrial gear units, with free shipping both ways and a free inspection before any work begins.

NORD builds modular drives across a wide torque range, from small worm gearmotors moving packaging lines up to industrial gear units in the hundreds of thousands of newton meters. The thing that makes a NORD unit distinct, and the thing that matters when we open one up, is the one piece UNICASE housing. There is no split case line, so there is no gasketed seam to leak and no sealing surface carrying torque. That design holds large roller bearings and keeps the gear axes in tight alignment, which is great for service life but also means a worn bore or a spun bearing has to be brought back true rather than shimmed out. That is exactly the kind of work we do in house. See our full gearbox repair capability and the brands we service.

Every NORD job starts with a free inspection and a free teardown report. We tell you what failed, why it failed, and what it costs before you commit. Then we pick the unit up, crate it, and ship it both ways at no charge, so it makes no difference whether your line is in Pasadena, Baytown, or three states away.

NORD gear units and gearmotors we rebuild

NORD runs a modular catalog, and we have rebuilt nearly every branch of it. The families we see most often on Houston equipment include the following.

  • Helical inline geared motors, the workhorse reducers on pumps, mixers, and general conveyor drives.
  • Parallel shaft and shaft mount units, hollow bore reducers that mount straight onto a conveyor head shaft.
  • Helical bevel geared motors, including the UNICASE bevel line, used where a right angle drive saves space on a belt or chain conveyor.
  • Worm and helical worm gear units, the SI and SK style universal series, common on packaging, intralogistics, and food lines that need high ratios.
  • MAXXDRIVE industrial gear units, the heavy block design for bulk handling, with output torque reaching into the hundreds of thousands of newton meters.

Whatever the size, we rebuild it to perform, including the integrated backstop, brake, and output shaft bearing arrangement that came on the original unit.

How NORD units actually fail

After enough teardowns you learn where each architecture gives out, and NORD units are no different. The patterns we see again and again:

  • Output shaft bearing fatigue. The big roller bearings the UNICASE housing is built around take the radial and thrust load from the driven machine. On overhung conveyor loads they spall and brinell over time, and a failing output bearing is usually the first thing knocking before anything else lets go.
  • Tooth pitting and micropitting. NORD runs case hardened and hard finished gearing, but startup overloads, marginal lubrication, and contamination still drive surface fatigue. Once pits open up and spalling begins, the tooth profile degrades and noise climbs.
  • Worm wheel wear and thermal overload. On the worm units, the bronze wheel is sacrificial against the steel worm. Run a self locking ratio over its thermal rating, use the wrong oil, or take shock loads, and that bronze wears fast and the unit overheats.
  • Seal leakage at the output and hollow shaft. Lost lubricant and ingress of dust or washdown water is one of the most common reasons a unit comes in, and it almost always means secondary bearing and gear damage by the time we see it.
  • Backstop wear. On inclined conveyors the integrated backstop holds the load. When it wears, the belt can roll back, which is both a production and a safety problem.

We diagnose all of this on the bench and document it in the inspection report so you are never guessing.

Our NORD rebuild process

We strip the unit completely, clean every part, and inspect each gear, shaft, bearing, and bore. Bearings are replaced with quality equivalents, seals are renewed, and worn bores are brought back to true rather than patched. When gears are pitted or a worm wheel is worn out, we cut new ones in house through our gear cutting shop, and we restore worn journals and bearing fits through bearing repair and shaft metalizing.

Because we are not tied to a single supplier, we will upgrade materials and bearing grades where the application justifies it, so the rebuilt unit comes back stronger than the original. We reassemble to spec, set the backlash and contact pattern, fill with the correct lubricant, and run test the unit before it ships. Every rebuild carries up to a 24 month workmanship warranty.

Why a Houston plant ships NORD work to us

NORD drives are everywhere in the industries that built this region. We see them on terminal and port bulk handling conveyors moving grain, aggregate, and petcoke, on process and packaging lines across the petrochemical corridor, on aerators, clarifiers, and screw conveyors in municipal and industrial wastewater plants, and on food and beverage lines running washdown rated units. For more on the sectors we serve, see industries, plus our oil field and mining equipment work.

Distance is not a factor. We pick up local NORD units ourselves, and for everyone else we crate, rig, and ship both ways for free. As our home base, Houston gets same day local pickup and delivery. Our 24 hour line is open when a line goes down at three in the morning.

What we repair and rebuild

What we fix.

Output shaft bearings

Spalled, brinelled, or noisy roller bearings on overhung conveyor loads, replaced and the housing bores restored to true.

Pitted and worn gears

Case hardened helical and bevel gear sets with surface fatigue, recut and rebuilt in house to restore the tooth profile.

Worn worm wheels

Sacrificial bronze wheels worn out from thermal overload or shock loads, replaced with correctly matched gearing.

Seal and lubricant leaks

Output and hollow shaft seal failures that drained the oil and let in dust or washdown water, sealed and the resulting wear corrected.

Thermal overload damage

Units that ran hot from overrating or wrong lubricant, inspected for cooked oil, discolored gears, and bearing damage, then rebuilt.

Backstop and brake faults

Worn integrated backstops that let inclined conveyors roll back, and failed brakes, repaired and reset to hold load.

Housing and bore wear

Egg shaped or spun bearing bores in the one piece UNICASE housing, brought back to size so alignment is restored.

Cracked or twisted shafts

Input, output, and hollow shafts that fatigued or sheared under shock load, repaired or remade to original fits.

Common questions

What plants ask us.

Are you an authorized NORD dealer?

No. We are an independent gear shop and we are not affiliated with NORD Drivesystems or NORD Gear Corporation. We repair and rebuild NORD units as an OEM alternative. We name the brand only to describe the equipment we service.

Can you rebuild a unit faster than ordering a new NORD?

Usually yes. New industrial gear units can carry long lead times. We give you a free inspection and a turnaround estimate up front, and because all work is done in house we control the schedule. For a line down situation our 24 hour line is 832 270 2009.

Do you rebuild MAXXDRIVE industrial gear units, not just the small gearmotors?

Yes. We rebuild the full range, from small worm and helical gearmotors up to the large MAXXDRIVE block units. We have the gear cutting and machining capacity in house to handle the big housings and gear sets.

What does it cost to find out what is wrong with my NORD gearbox?

Nothing. Inspection and teardown are free, and so is shipping both ways including crating and rigging. We send you a report on what failed and why, with a firm quote, before any paid work begins.

Will the rebuilt unit be as good as the original?

We rebuild stronger than the original. We replace bearings and seals with quality parts, restore worn bores and shafts to true, and upgrade materials or bearing grades where the application justifies it. Every rebuild carries up to a 24 month workmanship warranty.
