Marley cooling towers, now part of SPX Cooling Technologies, are on refineries, chemical plants, power stations and large commercial sites across the country, and the Geareducer is the right angle drive that turns the fan on most of them. It is a simple spiral bevel gearbox, and that simplicity is why it lasts, but it also means that when one fails it is almost always water in the oil, a worn seal, a tired bearing or a pitted bevel set. Cooling tower drives are also the last thing anyone looks at until the fan stops. We have built our process around finding all of it before we quote a single part.

Marley has built cooling tower drives for decades, and we service the families that reach our bench most often as an independent shop.
- Geareducer right angle fan drives. The classic Marley spiral bevel gearbox mounted at the fan hub. Single and double reduction versions, in a range of sizes to match the fan and motor.
- Older and legacy Geareducer models. Drives that have outlived their parts support. We reverse engineer the bevel set and shafts and rebuild the unit rather than replace the tower drive.
- Spiral bevel gear sets. The matched pinion and gear at the heart of every tower drive. We inspect for contact pattern, pitting and corrosion, regrind where we can, and cut new sets in house where we cannot.
- Fan shafts and drive shafts. Vertical fan shafts and horizontal drive shafts with worn journals, keyways and coupling fits, built back up and machined true.
- Other cooling tower drive brands. If the tower is Marley but the drive was replaced with another make over the years, send it anyway. We rebuild cooling tower gearboxes from every manufacturer.

How Marley drives actually fail
Cooling tower gearboxes fail because of where they live, not because of how they were built. These are the conditions we find most often on Marley drives that come through the shop.
- Water in the oil. The drive sits in a spray of warm water. Worn seals and a tired breather let moisture in, the oil emulsifies and loses its film, and the bearings and bevel set corrode and pit from the inside. This is the single most common cooling tower gearbox failure.
- Bearing corrosion and fatigue. Once water is in the oil the bearings go next. Rust pits the races, the rollers skid, and heat and metal in the oil follow.
- Spiral bevel pitting and contact loss. Degraded oil and misalignment pit the bevel flanks. As the contact pattern moves off center the drive gets loud, and the teeth eventually break.
- Seal and breather failure. Lip seals harden in the heat and the breather clogs, which both let water in and oil out. By the time the leak is visible the internal damage is usually done.
- Vibration and fan imbalance. An unbalanced or damaged fan shakes the gearbox for months. Bearings fatigue early, mounts loosen and housing feet crack. We check the housing as carefully as the gears.

How we rebuild a Marley cooling tower gearbox
Every Marley unit follows the same disciplined path through our shop, and it starts with a free, no obligation inspection.
- Teardown and inspection. We fully disassemble the unit, clean every part, and inspect gears, shafts, bearings, seals and the housing for wear, pitting, cracks and bore distortion. You get a written findings report before we quote.
- Root cause first. We do not just swap the broken part. We figure out why it broke, whether that is alignment, overload, lubrication or a worn upstream component, so the rebuild actually lasts.
- Machining and gear work. Minor flank wear gets reground. Severely worn or broken gears get cut new on our own machines. Worn shafts and bores are built up and machined back to spec, and housing bores are line bored true.
- Stronger than OEM. We rebuild with premium bearings and seals and, where it makes sense, upgraded materials and heat treatment so the unit comes back tougher than it was new.
- Test and document. The unit is reassembled to spec, checked for backlash, contact and runout, and documented before it ships.

My Geareducer has water in the oil. Is it worth rebuilding?
Usually yes. We tear it down, replace the corroded bearings and any pitted bevel gearing, fit new seals and a breather that keeps the water out, clean the oil system, and test it before it ships. It is one of the most common jobs we see.
Can you rebuild an old Geareducer that Marley no longer supports?
Yes. We measure the existing bevel set and shafts, draw them, and cut new gears in house to the original geometry, so a legacy drive can be rebuilt instead of replacing the whole fan drive.
