- Cooling tower fan drives. Right angle spiral bevel gearboxes mounted at the fan on industrial cooling towers. They run hot, wet and continuously, and their seals, oil and bearings decide how long they live.
- Vertical turbine pump drives. Right angle drives that carry the thrust of a deep well, irrigation or oilfield water pump on a hollow shaft. The thrust bearing and the hollow shaft bore are the wear points.
- Industrial fan drives. Spiral bevel drives on mine ventilation, process and exhaust fans, where vibration and long unattended runs wear bearings and seals.
- Spiral bevel gear sets. The matched pinion and gear at the heart of every Amarillo unit. We inspect for contact pattern and pitting, regrind where we can, and cut new sets in house where we cannot.

How Amarillo Gear drives actually fail
Amarillo Gear drives are rugged, so failures almost always trace back to environment, lubrication or time, not to bad design. These are the conditions we find most often.
- Thrust bearing wear on pump drives. A vertical turbine pump hangs its entire column and hydraulic thrust on the drive. When the thrust bearing runs out of life you get heat, metal in the oil, and eventually a seized shaft.
- Water in the oil on cooling tower drives. Tower drives live in a spray of warm water. Worn seals and a tired breather let moisture in, the oil emulsifies, and the bearings and bevel set corrode and pit from the inside.
- Spiral bevel pitting and contact loss. Overload, misalignment and degraded oil pit the bevel flanks. As the pattern moves off center the noise rises and the teeth eventually break. We reset contact on every rebuild.
- Hollow shaft and bore wear. On pump drives the hollow shaft frets against the pump shaft and the bore loses its fit, which shows up as vibration and runout.
- Vibration driven fatigue. Fan and tower drives run for years without a look. Loose mounts, unbalanced fans and misaligned shafts fatigue the bearings and crack housing feet long before the gears wear out.
Because water and vibration do so much of the damage on these drives, we rebuild the seals and breather system as carefully as the gears.

- Teardown and inspection. We fully disassemble the unit, clean every part, and inspect gears, shafts, bearings, seals and the housing for wear, pitting, cracks and bore distortion. You get a written findings report before we quote.
- Root cause first. We do not just swap the broken part. We figure out why it broke, whether that is alignment, overload, lubrication or a worn upstream component, so the rebuild actually lasts.
- Machining and gear work. Minor flank wear gets reground. Severely worn or broken gears get cut new on our own machines. Worn shafts and bores are built up and machined back to spec, and housing bores are line bored true.
- Stronger than OEM. We rebuild with premium bearings and seals and, where it makes sense, upgraded materials and heat treatment so the unit comes back tougher than it was new.
- Test and document. The unit is reassembled to spec, checked for backlash, contact and runout, and documented before it ships.
