Extruder drive thrust bearings
Failed or worn thrust packs in POSIRED and POSIREX extruder drives, rebuilt to carry full screw axial load and high melt pressure again.
PIV gear units run some of the hardest duty in plastics, rubber and chemical processing, and when one fails it usually takes a whole production line down with it. We are a family owned Houston gear shop, established in 1998, and we repair and rebuild PIV drives in house as a practical alternative to long OEM lead times. From single shaft extruder gearboxes to twin shaft compounder drives, vertical mixer gears and the classic PIV chain variator, we tear them down, find the real root cause, and put them back together stronger than they left the factory. See our full gearbox repair capabilities for the bigger picture.
PIV, short for Positively Infinitely Variable, built its name on the all steel link chain variator and grew into heavy industrial gear units for extruders, kneaders, mixers, rolling mills and presses. That equipment is precise and heavily loaded, so it does not forgive worn bearings or starved oil for long. Most of what we see is the same handful of failure patterns: thrust bearing breakdown under screw load, pitting on the gear flanks, shaft and spline wear, and seal leaks that quietly starve the gears of oil. We have built our process around catching all of it before we quote a single part.
Distance is not a problem. We offer free shipping both ways, free pickup and delivery including crating and rigging, and a free inspection before you commit to anything. Whether your PIV unit drives a compounding line, a profile extruder or a process mixer, send it in and we will tell you exactly what is wrong. We document our specialty in extruder gearbox repair too, since that is where most PIV drives live.
PIV built a broad catalog, and over the years we have had most of it on the bench. We service the full range as an independent shop, including the families below.
If your unit is not on this list but it says PIV on the tag, send it anyway. We cut our own gears, so we are not limited to whatever happens to be in a parts catalog. See our gear cutting work.
PIV equipment is well built, so failures almost always trace back to load, lubrication or time, not to bad design. These are the conditions we find most often on PIV units that come through the shop.
Because so many PIV failures start at the bearings, we treat bearing work as its own discipline. See our bearing repair page.
Every PIV unit follows the same disciplined path through our shop, and it starts with a free, no obligation inspection.
All of this happens under one roof in Houston. We do not farm out the hard parts, which is how we hold quality and keep turnaround honest.
We are an independent gear repair shop. We are not an authorized PIV dealer and we are not affiliated with the PIV brand or its owners. We name PIV only to describe the equipment we service, and we repair and rebuild these units as an OEM alternative for plants that need them back in service without OEM lead times.
Because we ship free both ways and handle pickup, delivery, crating and rigging at no charge, it does not matter whether your plant is in Houston or across the country. The inspection is free and there is no obligation to proceed. If you want to see the kind of heavy industrial work we do every day, our industries and brands pages cover the rest of the equipment we keep running.
Up to a 24 month workmanship warranty backs every rebuild, which is our way of standing behind the fact that the unit really did leave here right.
Failed or worn thrust packs in POSIRED and POSIREX extruder drives, rebuilt to carry full screw axial load and high melt pressure again.
Pitted, spalled or broken helical and bevel helical gears reground or cut new in house and reset to correct contact and backlash.
POSIRED TS twin shaft units for co rotating twin screw extruders and double shaft mixers, rebuilt to hold tight center distance and alignment.
POSIRED R vertical shaft mixer drives that carry combined radial, axial and bending loads in chemical and process service.
A200 and RH series chain variators with worn link chains and pitted conical discs restored to smooth, slip free speed control.
Input and output shafts, splines and coupling bores built up and machined back to spec to restore alignment and stop further damage.
Leaking seals, contaminated oil and starved bearings corrected so the rebuilt unit stays cool and properly lubricated.
Cracked, worn or distorted housings welded, line bored and machined true so bearings and gears seat correctly.
Yes. We ship free both ways and cover pickup, delivery, crating and rigging at no charge, so your location does not matter. Plants across the country send us PIV extruder drives, mixer gears and variators every week.
No. We are an independent gear repair shop and we are not affiliated with the PIV brand or its owners. We repair and rebuild PIV units as an OEM alternative and name the brand only to describe the equipment we service.
On extruder drives it is almost always the thrust bearing. The screw pushes back with more than ten tons of axial load, and once the oil film or the bearing gives out you get heat, contamination and eventual seizure. We rebuild the thrust pack to carry full load again.
We cut our own gears in house, so we are not limited to catalog parts. Severely worn or broken helical and bevel gears get cut new to spec, and minor flank wear gets reground.
It depends on what we find during the free inspection. We send a written findings report and a firm quote before any work begins, so you know the cost and the timeline before you commit. There is no obligation to proceed.
Free shipping both ways, free inspection, and an up to a 24 month warranty on every rebuild. Tell us about your unit and we reply fast, often the same day.
