PIV Gearbox Repair and Rebuild

PIV gear units run some of the hardest duty in plastics, rubber and chemical processing, and when one fails it usually takes a whole production line down with it. We are a family owned Houston gear shop, established in 1998, and we repair and rebuild PIV drives in house as a practical alternative to long OEM lead times. From single shaft extruder gearboxes to twin shaft compounder drives, vertical mixer gears and the classic PIV chain variator, we tear them down, find the real root cause, and put them back together stronger than they left the factory. See our full gearbox repair capabilities for the bigger picture.

Yes, we repair and rebuild PIV gear units. Solution Gear Co. is an independent Houston gear shop that rebuilds PIV extruder drives, twin shaft and mixer gears, and chain variators as an OEM alternative, with all work done in house, free shipping both ways, and up to a 24 month workmanship warranty.

PIV, short for Positively Infinitely Variable, built its name on the all steel link chain variator and grew into heavy industrial gear units for extruders, kneaders, mixers, rolling mills and presses. That equipment is precise and heavily loaded, so it does not forgive worn bearings or starved oil for long. Most of what we see is the same handful of failure patterns: thrust bearing breakdown under screw load, pitting on the gear flanks, shaft and spline wear, and seal leaks that quietly starve the gears of oil. We have built our process around catching all of it before we quote a single part.

Distance is not a problem. We offer free shipping both ways, free pickup and delivery including crating and rigging, and a free inspection before you commit to anything. Whether your PIV unit drives a compounding line, a profile extruder or a process mixer, send it in and we will tell you exactly what is wrong. We document our specialty in extruder gearbox repair too, since that is where most PIV drives live.

PIV gear units we repair

PIV built a broad catalog, and over the years we have had most of it on the bench. We service the full range as an independent shop, including the families below.

  • POSIRED extruder drives. Helical and bevel helical reducers built for single screw and twin screw extruders, compounders and injection lines. These carry the screw thrust through an integrated or attached thrust bearing, which is the part that works hardest and fails first.
  • POSIRED TS twin shaft gears. Two output shafts on tight centers for co rotating twin screw extruders and double shaft mixers, kneaders and compactors. Tight center distance means tight tolerances, and any backlash or shaft deflection shows up fast.
  • POSIREX single shaft drives. The modular single shaft extruder gearbox derived from the POSIRED range, used on pipe, profile, sheet, blown film and recycling lines.
  • POSIRED R mixer gears. Vertical shaft units common in chemical processing, aerators, sifters and discharge equipment, where the output shaft sees radial, axial and bending loads at once.
  • PIV chain variators. The all steel link chain drives, including the A200 and RH series, that vary speed and torque infinitely at constant power between adjustable conical discs.

If your unit is not on this list but it says PIV on the tag, send it anyway. We cut our own gears, so we are not limited to whatever happens to be in a parts catalog. See our gear cutting work.

How PIV drives actually fail

PIV equipment is well built, so failures almost always trace back to load, lubrication or time, not to bad design. These are the conditions we find most often on PIV units that come through the shop.

  • Thrust bearing collapse. An extruder screw pushes back hard, often more than ten tons of axial load with melt pressures above thirty megapascals. That force lands on the thrust bearing inside the gearbox. When oil film breaks down or the bearing simply wears out, you get heat, metal in the oil, and eventually a seized or destroyed thrust pack. This is the single most common PIV extruder drive failure.
  • Tooth flank pitting and spalling. Overload, misalignment and degraded oil cause pitting on the helical and bevel tooth flanks. Left alone it grows into spalling and broken teeth. We inspect every flank for wear pattern and contact before deciding what gets reground and what gets recut.
  • Shaft and spline wear. Input and output shafts, splines and coupling bores wear and fret over thousands of running hours, which throws off alignment and feeds back into bearing and gear damage.
  • Seal failure and lube starvation. Worn seals leak oil, drop the level, and quietly starve the gears and bearings. By the time the leak is obvious the internal damage is often already done.
  • Chain and disc wear on variators. On the chain variators, the link chain and the conical running surfaces wear and pit, which shows up as speed drift, slip and noise under load.

Because so many PIV failures start at the bearings, we treat bearing work as its own discipline. See our bearing repair page.

How we rebuild a PIV gearbox

Every PIV unit follows the same disciplined path through our shop, and it starts with a free, no obligation inspection.

  • Teardown and inspection. We fully disassemble the unit, clean every part, and inspect gears, shafts, bearings, the thrust pack, seals and the housing for wear, pitting, cracks and bore distortion. You get a written findings report before we quote.
  • Root cause first. We do not just swap the broken part. We figure out why it broke, whether that is alignment, thrust overload, lubrication or a worn upstream component, so the rebuild actually lasts.
  • Machining and gear work. Minor flank wear gets reground. Severely worn or broken gears get cut new on our own machines. Worn shafts and bores are built up and machined back to spec, and housing bores are line bored true.
  • Stronger than OEM. We rebuild with premium bearings and seals and, where it makes sense, upgraded materials and heat treatment so the unit comes back tougher than it was new.
  • Test and document. The unit is reassembled to spec, checked for backlash, contact and runout, and documented before it ships.

All of this happens under one roof in Houston. We do not farm out the hard parts, which is how we hold quality and keep turnaround honest.

Independent PIV service, free shipping both ways

We are an independent gear repair shop. We are not an authorized PIV dealer and we are not affiliated with the PIV brand or its owners. We name PIV only to describe the equipment we service, and we repair and rebuild these units as an OEM alternative for plants that need them back in service without OEM lead times.

Because we ship free both ways and handle pickup, delivery, crating and rigging at no charge, it does not matter whether your plant is in Houston or across the country. The inspection is free and there is no obligation to proceed. If you want to see the kind of heavy industrial work we do every day, our industries and brands pages cover the rest of the equipment we keep running.

Up to a 24 month workmanship warranty backs every rebuild, which is our way of standing behind the fact that the unit really did leave here right.

What we repair and rebuild

What we fix.

Extruder drive thrust bearings

Failed or worn thrust packs in POSIRED and POSIREX extruder drives, rebuilt to carry full screw axial load and high melt pressure again.

Helical and bevel gear sets

Pitted, spalled or broken helical and bevel helical gears reground or cut new in house and reset to correct contact and backlash.

Twin shaft compounder gears

POSIRED TS twin shaft units for co rotating twin screw extruders and double shaft mixers, rebuilt to hold tight center distance and alignment.

Vertical mixer gears

POSIRED R vertical shaft mixer drives that carry combined radial, axial and bending loads in chemical and process service.

PIV chain variators

A200 and RH series chain variators with worn link chains and pitted conical discs restored to smooth, slip free speed control.

Worn shafts and splines

Input and output shafts, splines and coupling bores built up and machined back to spec to restore alignment and stop further damage.

Seals and lubrication

Leaking seals, contaminated oil and starved bearings corrected so the rebuilt unit stays cool and properly lubricated.

Housing and bore repair

Cracked, worn or distorted housings welded, line bored and machined true so bearings and gears seat correctly.

Common questions

What plants ask us.

Do you repair PIV extruder gearboxes if we are not in Houston?

Yes. We ship free both ways and cover pickup, delivery, crating and rigging at no charge, so your location does not matter. Plants across the country send us PIV extruder drives, mixer gears and variators every week.

Are you an authorized PIV dealer?

No. We are an independent gear repair shop and we are not affiliated with the PIV brand or its owners. We repair and rebuild PIV units as an OEM alternative and name the brand only to describe the equipment we service.

What is the most common PIV gearbox failure you see?

On extruder drives it is almost always the thrust bearing. The screw pushes back with more than ten tons of axial load, and once the oil film or the bearing gives out you get heat, contamination and eventual seizure. We rebuild the thrust pack to carry full load again.

Can you cut new gears for a PIV unit, or do you only swap parts?

We cut our own gears in house, so we are not limited to catalog parts. Severely worn or broken helical and bevel gears get cut new to spec, and minor flank wear gets reground.

What does a PIV rebuild cost and how long does it take?

It depends on what we find during the free inspection. We send a written findings report and a firm quote before any work begins, so you know the cost and the timeline before you commit. There is no obligation to proceed.
