Gearbox Repair for Orange, Texas

Orange sits right on the Sabine River where Chemical Row, the shipyards, and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway all run on heavy gear drives that cannot afford to sit down. When a reducer, a marine reduction gear, or an extruder drive lets go in Orange, the clock starts immediately. Solution Gear Co. has been rebuilding that kind of equipment since 1998 from our shop at 8449 West Belfort Ave in Houston, and we put Orange plants on the same fast turnaround we give the rest of the Gulf Coast.

Solution Gear Co. repairs and rebuilds industrial gearboxes for Orange, Texas plants from our Houston shop. We cover the Sabine area petrochemical, marine and paper industries, with free shipping both ways, free inspection, and up to a 24 month workmanship warranty.

We are a family owned shop and every job stays in house, from teardown and inspection through gear cutting, bearing fitting, and final test. That matters when your unit feeds a polyethylene line at Chemical Row or turns a propeller shaft on the river. We rebuild units stronger than OEM, not just back to print, and we back the work with up to a 24 month warranty. Whether you need straight gearbox repair, a worn extruder gearbox rebuilt, or fresh gear cutting on a damaged set, we handle it under one roof.

Orange is about 110 miles east of us, so the only question people ask is about distance. We answer it the same way every time. Shipping is free both ways, pickup and delivery are free including crating and rigging, and the inspection is free. The miles are our problem, not yours.

The Orange industries we keep running

Orange runs on three kinds of heavy machinery, and all three live or die on their gear drives. Each one fails in its own way, and we have seen every version of it on our bench.

  • Petrochemical and plastics on Chemical Row. The plants strung along the Sabine and Neches waterway, including the Chevron Phillips polyethylene complex and the legacy DuPont Sabine River Works resins site, run extruder drives, agitator and mixer reducers, pump drives, and cooling tower units. These are the workhorses of HDPE and chemical production.
  • Marine and shipbuilding on the river. Orange has built ships since the 1800s, from Levingston offshore rigs to the WWII warship yards. Today the working yards still construct and service tugs, inland push boats, tank barges, deck barges, dredges, and offshore support vessels. All of that depends on marine reduction gears and propulsion drives.
  • Paper and forest products. The Sabine region paper and wood industry runs roll drives, press section gearing, and conveyor reducers that take continuous load and never get a real day off.

Different industries, same problem. When the gearbox stops, the line stops.

How these units actually fail

We do not guess at root cause. We tear the unit down, measure everything, and tell you what really went wrong so it does not come back.

On an HDPE single screw extruder, the gearbox is fighting a continuous axial thrust that can run past 500 kilonewtons, day in and day out. That load lands on the thrust bearing, so thrust bearings are the first thing to wear, often with heat that breaks the oil down and then chews the gear teeth. We rebuild the thrust package and the gearing together, because fixing one without the other just buys you a few months. See our extruder gearbox repair and bearing repair work for the full process.

On a marine reduction gear off a tug or push boat, the enemy is salt water and shock load. Water contamination spalls the bearing races, pitch line pitting shows up when the oil viscosity drops or the unit gets overloaded, and the thrust bearing running face and pivot wear from constant ahead and astern duty. We rebuild the housing, requalify the bores, recut the gears when they are pitted past spec, and reset every clearance.

On plant agitators and mixers, the thrust bearing carries the whole vertical load and the process vapors attack the seals and lube. When that thrust bearing collapses, the shaft drops and the gearing follows. We fix the cause, upgrade the bearing arrangement where it makes sense, and seal it back up right.

Distance is handled, turnaround is not

Being in Houston instead of Orange does not slow your repair down, because we built the logistics to erase the gap. Call us, and we schedule a free pickup. We crate and rig the unit ourselves, ship it both directions on our dime, and the inspection when it lands is free. You see a written report and a price before any work starts.

From there everything happens in our shop, which is how we hold the schedule. We are not sending your gearbox out to a third party and waiting on someone else. Our people cut the gears, fit the bearings, line bore the housings, and run the final test right here. For units that pair with other plant equipment, we also handle roll repair, pump rebuilds, and hydraulic cylinder repair so you can consolidate a turnaround instead of chasing several vendors.

Why Orange plants rebuild instead of buying new

A new OEM gearbox on a long lead time is the wrong answer when your line is down and the freight is your cost both ways anyway. We rebuild the unit you already have, stronger than it came from the factory, usually faster and for less than replacement. We upgrade bearing grades, improve sealing against the salt and vapor that killed the original, and recut gears to a better finish than the worn set ever had.

Every rebuild carries up to a 24 month workmanship warranty, which is longer than most shops will stand behind their work. We have been doing this since 1998, all in house, family owned, and we put our name on the result. For emergencies our 24 hour line is 832 270 2009, and the main shop line is 713 270 6000.

What we repair and rebuild

What we fix.

Petrochemical reducers

Mixer, agitator, pump and cooling tower drives from the Chemical Row plants on the Sabine and Neches waterway, rebuilt stronger than OEM.

HDPE extruder gearboxes

Single screw extruder drives where continuous axial thrust past 500 kN wears the thrust bearing and overheats the oil. We rebuild thrust and gearing together.

Marine reduction gears

Tug, push boat and offshore vessel propulsion gears fighting salt water, water contaminated bearings, pitch line pitting and worn thrust faces.

Paper and roll drives

Press section gearing, roll drives and conveyor reducers from the Sabine region paper and forest products mills that run continuous load.

Thrust bearing rebuilds

Thrust bearing replacement and arrangement upgrades for extruders, vertical agitators and marine drives where axial load is the killer.

Gear cutting and recutting

Fresh gears cut in house when teeth are pitted, spalled or worn past spec, to a finish better than the original set.

Housing and bore repair

Line boring, bore requalification and case repair so rebuilt bearings and gears seat true and hold clearance.

Shaft and bearing repair

Worn input and output shafts, fretted journals and damaged bearing fits restored to print or upgraded for longer life.

Common questions

What plants ask us.

Do you actually service Orange, TX if your shop is in Houston?

Yes. Orange is about 110 miles from our shop and we work the whole Gulf Coast. Shipping is free both ways, pickup and delivery are free including crating and rigging, and the inspection is free, so the distance costs you nothing.

How fast can you turn a gearbox repair around for an Orange plant?

We move quickly because everything happens in our own shop, from teardown to final test. We schedule a free pickup right away, inspect the unit, and give you a written report and price before work starts. For emergencies our 24 hour line is 832 270 2009.

What kinds of gearboxes from Orange do you repair?

Petrochemical mixer, agitator and pump reducers, HDPE extruder drives, marine reduction gears off tugs and push boats, and paper and roll drives. If it carries load and turns gears, we rebuild it.

Is a rebuild really better than buying a new OEM unit?

Usually yes. We rebuild the unit you already own stronger than OEM, with upgraded bearings and better sealing against salt and process vapor, often faster and for less than a new gearbox on a long lead time. Every rebuild carries up to a 24 month workmanship warranty.

What does the free inspection include?

After our free pickup we tear the unit down, measure everything, and identify the true root cause rather than just the symptom. You get a written report and a firm price before we cut a single gear or fit a single bearing.
